Fire Alarm Contractors/License Holder,
During late 2002 the Independent Fire Districts of Lee County agreed to require all fire alarm panels with supervisory signals to be UL certificated systems. While obtaining a permit at Lee County, or during the final fire inspection, the fire alarm contractors were required to provide documentation that the system was a UL certificated system. During this economic decline some fire alarm contractors have been taking over fire alarm systems without keeping up the UL certification. This may be due to lack of knowledge on how to determine if the fire alarm panel was a UL certificated system. In order to assist you in determining if the fire alarm panel was UL certificated we have developed some steps to assist you.
Look inside the log book for the UL certificate. Look inside the log book for the certificate of completion that indicates that the system was UL. Call the former fire alarm contractor to ask if the system was UL certificated. Look up the building address on the Lee County website to determine when the fire alarm permit was issued. Any fire alarm system after March 2003 (that has supervisory signals) will be UL certificated. The website for Lee County is http://permits.leegov.com. Call the AHJ of record to ask. The AHJ can go to the UL website to determine if the system had a UL certificate. It is the fire alarm company’s responsibility to ascertain if this system was UL and to maintain said certificate. Systems that are found without UL certificates, which were formerly required, will have documentation sent to UL indicating the site address and the fire alarm contractor. Should you have any questions pertaining to the fire alarm panel you are taking over please contact your AHJ.
